WITH PORTUGUESE EARTHENWARE

COLORED CLAY

In the initial plastic stage of the clay, we add pigments to the wet clay, which we then use to create our handmade tiles from slab technique.

The entire process involves extensive testing, cutting, waiting, handling, pressing, shelving and frequent follow-up, all of which require great care and patience.

AFTER THE FIRST FIRING

SCREEN PRINTING WITH GLAZE

Screen printing allows for direct printing onto clay at various stages, using different types of coatings, resulting in diverse aesthetics.

On this process, we only use glaze to screen print the design after the first firing. The transparency of the glaze will give color contrast to the tile, after the second firing.

Our Screen Printed Tiles collection incorporates multiple processes in addition to the use of glaze.

MELTING THE GLAZE ONTO THE BISQUEWARE

FIRING OVER 1000°C

The transparency of the glaze used to screen print the design provides color contrast, as the tile is made with colored clay. This edition is intentionally not completely glazed on the top surface for conceptual/ aesthetic reasons.

Before it's finished, each tile goes through two firings - bisque and glaze - at around 1000°C(1832°F). From closing to opening the kiln, each firing can last more than 24 hours.
