João Lince
2024
By the artist: "Não senti nada com o nosso primeiro beijo. Minto. Senti-me frio. Os pássaros voam de telhado em telhado com pedaços de bolo nos bicos. Dei-te a mão no metro e estavas quente. Minto. Durante a viagem até ao Cais a carruagem estava vazia. Dois piscos parecem dançar: andam tão próximos, deram o laço no ar. Fodemos, senti-me bem. Minto. Algo estava a pesar-me. O sol está-se a ir, eles chilreiam em bandos no Jardim Constantino. O silêncio é bom, somos íntimos. Minto. Sinto-me só. Que bonitos, todos têm um par. Estamos no quarto, fazemos conchinha, mas eu vim para a cozinha porque não consigo dormir. Já não vejo os piscos. Aninharam."

João Lince (1997) is a tattoo artist and visual artist from Porto with a degree in Communication Design and a master’s in Image Design (FBAUP, 2022). Between painted skins, illustrated books, and tiles, he is often found between Bonfim and Anjos, where he enjoys having coffee and sketching themes of mystical loves and diabolical heartbreaks. In 2021, he released his first book, Dante, a queer reinterpretation of hell through illustration and velvet. More recently, in 2024, he presented his second solo project at Livraria Aberta (Porto), the exhibition A morte do bezerro ("The Death of the Calf"), where he celebrated the end of yet another “mythological love” and, together with Amargo, unearthed his emotions in sentimental archaeology, a solstice exhibition at Senhora Presidenta gallery (Porto). SCREEN PRINTING MEETS CERAMICS
SCREEN PRINTED WITH CERAMIC INKS

WITH PORTUGUESE WHITE EARTHENWARE
FROM PLASTIC TO GLAZEWARE
Each tile is made one by one, with the slab technique, which involves rolling out the clay into flat pieces, using a slab roller.
Throughout the entire process, theres a lot of testing, cutting, waiting, handling, pressing, shelving and frequent follow-up, all of which require great care and patience.
Before printing with ceramic inks, each tile undergoes a bisque firing.
AFTER THE FIRST FIRING
BISQUE STAGE
In this edition, after the bisque firing, the tiles are printed with ceramic inks (one color at a time) and then glazed. Or the other way around.
With screen printing it's possible to print directly onto the clay, at various stages, using different types of coatings, resulting in diverse aesthetics.
In this collection, we use more than one process.
MELTING THE GLAZE ONTO THE BISQUEWARE
FIRING OVER 1000°C
Besides the use of ceramic inks on this edition, every piece is finished with transparant glaze.
Before it's finished, each tile goes through two firings - bisque and glaze - at around 1000°C(1832°F). From closing to opening the kiln, each firing can last more than 24 hours.
